The Mercedes is in the midst of a huge revamp of its struggling SUV line and the first of five entirely rebooted models will be the 2019 Mercedes GLA. Overall, the GLA is going to undergo changes to bring it closer in appearance and performance to the successful A-Class line of SUV’s.
The width and wheelbase will be expanded, to improve the vehicle’s stability and provide additional passenger space inside. The engine and powertrain are being upgraded and the exterior is undergoing a noticeable revamp.
2019 Mercedes GLA – Refreshed Design
The exterior of the 2019 Mercedes GLA will undergo some substantial changes. There will be new LED front headlights, along with an updated grille and hood. The rear end will get a new shape on the tail lights along with widened body panels and a roof that slopes just slightly more than the current model.
All of these changes are in part the result of the newly widened frame, which will add four inches to the SUV’s width and nearly seven inches to the length. The expanded exterior will add nearly four square feet to the interior and passenger compartment of the already spacious GLA.
Speaking of the interior, the 2019 Mercedes GLA will also have a completely redesigned and upgraded interior. The interior materials will be improved across the board and the seats will be leather in the standard base model. The navigation system gets a complete upgrade and the instrumentation display gets a new heads-up look. However, the entertainment system gets a new audio makeover and redesigned touchpad as well as a docking and charging station for personal devices.
The GLA currently comes standard with a four-cylinder, 2.0-liter turbocharged inline gasoline engine. This engine will cranks out 208 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. The standard 7-speed dual-clutch automatic provides the solid response. Furthermore, it will give a healthy fuel economy of 24 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. However, the drivetrain also gets a more robust build, along with a new off-roading capability.
The 2019 Mercedes GLA will also get a number of new features to help with driveability and performance. The parking assist feature will be standard on the package and the new Mercedes semi-autonomous driving assistance technology will be a premium add-on. That technology would allow for hands-off driving on highways and other less-crowded roadways. It’s yet another step towards full semi-autonomous driving tech, which Mercedes plans to roll out by 2022.
Release Date and MSRP of the 2019 Mercedes GLA
The Mercedes has not officially announced an MSRP or release date for the 2019 Mercedes GLA. But it’s likely to cost slightly more than the $33,000 base model price for the 2018 edition. The performance package and semi-autonomous driving tech could add nearly $15,000 to the base price.
