The company has announced a new SUV known as the 2018 Mazda CX-8, which is seemingly engineered and built with the Japanese market in mind. As of this writing, details appear to be scant. However, we have reports alleging that the CX-8 is a tad smaller than the CX-9 model in the US.
The automaker revealed that the next-gen model serves as the flagship edition of its SUV lineup in Japan. It is an updated crossover SUV designed for people who appreciate a quality vehicle that seats five. The Mazda’s latest release has the looks, high-end feel and performance reminiscence of a Mazda. Even adults can sit comfortably in the car’s third row.
2018 Mazda CX-8 – Lavish Exterior and Spacious Interior
The 2018 Mazda CX-8 measures 192.91 inches long, 72.44 inches wide, and 68.11 inches high. Its wheelbase extends up to 115.35 inches and is identical to the current CX-9. Aside from dimensions, the revamped SUV will highlight hosts of KODO-Soul design cues. We did notice that the overall design of the taillights and headlights is similar to what we see on the XC-9 version.
There are only slight differences, though. On this model, the rear taillights are tinted, and headlights lack the orange side marker that is visible on the CX-9. There’s also a noticeable alteration to the rear stationary glass and belt line. At a glance, the new CX-8 seems as if it’s just an inch shorter than CX-9 given the length of the rear doors. While the rear stationary glass roughly takes the same size, it expresses a whole different shape on the model under review. Besides, the chrome beltline comes to a sharp point in the rear. And, this point is slightly higher than the one seen on the CX-9.
The Japanese automaker claims that the inbound model has adequate third-row suitable for adult passengers. The Mazda engineers and stylists have worked round the clock to incorporate a new dimension of maturity into the KODO-Soul of Motion design theme. The resulting car exudes an enduring edgy look that continues to excite all its enthusiasts.
The door trim panels on the 2018 Mazda CX-8 have smaller and thinner aluminum inserts in addition to a longer armrest. Further, the seat cushions also have less padding in comparison to the ongoing CX-9. Side bolstering is almost identical in both models, although the CX-9 version receives black accents on the seat cushions and seat rests. Though the face of the dash has been hidden at the time of this writing, we are likely to find the same infotainment display spiking up on the compartment.
Engine and Transmission of the 2018 Mazda CX-8
Rather than using a gasoline mill on the 2018 Mazda CX-8, Mazda opts for a 2.2-liter diesel engine. This motor is said to be a new generation clean diesel unit that spits out 173 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. It will likely be hooked to a six-speed automatic transmission. Another option for a six-speed manual gearbox may be available in the future.
The 2018 Mazda CX-8 comes with the FWD as standard with AWD being optional. We do not have any more details beyond that, so we just have to wait.
Starting Price and Production
The 2018 Mazda CX-8 will probably carry a starting price sticker of $24,000. The newest CX-8 will have the release date on the end of this year.
